چکیده

We present a measurement of the K-band luminosity function (LF) of field galaxies obtained from near-infrared imaging of a sample of 345 galaxies selected from the Stromlo-APM Redshift Survey. The LF is reasonably well fitted over the 10-mag range 226 < MK < 216 by a Schechter function with parameters a ˆ 21:16 ^ 0:19; M* ˆ 223:58 ^ 0:42 and f* ˆ 0:012 ^ 0:008 Mpc, assuming a Hubble constant of H0 ˆ 100 km s Mpc. We have also estimated the LF for two subsets of galaxies subdivided by the equivalent width of the Ha emission line at EW…Ha† ˆ 10 A. There is no significant difference in LF shape between the two samples, although there is a hint (,1s significance) that emission-line galaxies (ELGs) have M* roughly 1 mag fainter than non-ELGs. Contrary to the optical LF, there is no difference in faint-end slope a between the two samples.

A wide - field K – band survey . The luminosity function of galaxies

We present the first determination of the near-infrared K−band luminosity function of field galaxies from a wide field K−selected redshift survey. The best fit Schechter function parameters are M∗ = −23.12 + 5log(h), α = −0.91, and φ∗ = 1.66 × 10h Mpc. We estimate that systematics are no more than 0.1mag in M∗ and 0.1 in α, which is comparable to the statistical errors on this measurement. Subj...

The Galaxy Luminosity Function in Clusters and the Field

We present the results from a CCD survey of the B-band luminosity functions of nine clusters of galaxies, and compare them to published photographic luminosity functions of nearby poor clusters like Virgo and Fornax and also to the field luminosity function. We derive a composite luminosity function by taking the weighted mean of all the individual cluster luminosity functions; this composite l...

The Morphological Type Dependence of K-band Luminosity Functions

Differential 2.2μm (K-band) luminosity functions are presented for a complete sample of 1570 nearby (Vgsr ≤ 3000 km/s, where Vgsr is the velocity measured with respect to the Galactic standard of rest), bright (K ≤ 10 mag), galaxies segregated by visible morphology. The K-band luminosity function for late-type spirals follows a power law that rises towards low luminosities whereas the K-band lu...

The K band galaxy luminosity functions of three massive high redshift clusters of galaxies

The K band galaxy luminosity functions of three massive high redshift clusters of galaxies. ABSTRACT K band observations of the galaxy populations of three high redshift (z = 0.8–1.0), X-ray selected, massive clusters are presented. The observations reach a depth of K ≃ 21.5, corresponding to K * + 3.5 mag. The evolution of the galaxy properties are discussed in terms of their K band luminosity...

Nearby Galaxies in the 2μm All Sky Survey I. K-band Luminosity Functions

Differential Ks-band luminosity functions (LFs) are presented for a complete sample of 1613 nearby bright galaxies segregated by visible morphology. The LF for late-type spirals follows a power law that rises towards low luminosities whereas the LFs for ellipticals, lenticulars and bulge-dominated spirals are peaked and decline toward both higher and lower luminosities. Each morphological type ...
